✨ What the worksheet trains

Reading a calendar is not just finding a number: it means decoding the initials of the days (L, M, M, J, V, S, D — two M’s here, for mardi and mercredi), matching the row of the day with the column of the month, then writing the date in full words. Exercise 2 goes the other way: read a date written out (« le lundi 16 mars ») and place it in the right spot.

Two directions, one skill: finding one’s way through time in French. And along the way, a useful notion: un trimestre = 3 mois — here, the first quarter of the year.

1 👀 Observe

Look at the three months — January, February, March — and the day initials.

2 🔤 Decode

L = lundi, M = mardi, M = mercredi, J = jeudi, V = vendredi, S = samedi, D = dimanche.

3 ✍️ Write

Exercise 1: write the full date of six events already noted on the calendar.

4 📌 Place

Exercise 2: place six new dates on the calendar.

📅 The two exercises

🔍 Exercise 1 · from the calendar to the text

Six events are already noted (Paul’s birthday, the doctor’s appointment, Leïla’s wedding, Valérie’s birthday, a meal with Ismaël, an evening at the theatre): the student writes each date in full words.

📌 Exercise 2 · from the text to the calendar

Six dates written in full words (bank appointment, holidays, flat visit, restaurant, Victoria’s birthday, swimming pool): the student places them on the calendar.

🗓️ The support

Three full month grids (January, February, March), with day initials — the first quarter of the year.

⚠️ The classic trap: the two M’s of the week (mardi and mercredi). Before starting, have students recite the days in order and spot which of the two M’s falls on the 1st of each month: everything else follows from that.

✅ Exercise 1: the dates to find

Event on the left, full date on the right — a way to check in a few seconds:

1Paul’s birthdaymercredi 8 janvier
2Doctor’s appointment (5 p.m.)lundi 13 janvier
3Leïla’s weddingsamedi 25 janvier
4Valérie’s birthdaydimanche 29 mars
5Meal with Ismaëllundi 9 mars
6Evening at the theatrejeudi 27 février

📌 Exercise 2: the dates to place

🏦 Bank appointment · lundi 16 mars
🧳 Holidays · samedi 8 février to lundi 24 février
🏠 Flat visit · mardi 4 février
🍽️ Restaurant · samedi 7 mars
🎂 Victoria’s birthday · mercredi 22 janvier
🏊 Swimming pool · vendredi 27 mars
💡 Teaching tip: have students read the dates of exercise 2 out loud before placing them — « lundi seize mars » — then let them check in pairs. The holidays (from the 8th to the 24th of February) require crossing out or colouring a whole period: a good moment to talk about durations.
