Finding a Vacation Destination: Summer Ads (A1) and Winter Ads (A2) 🗺️

One family, two seasons, two levels. In summer (A1), the family looks for an affordable destination in July: four ads — Croatia, Portugal, Spain, Morocco — and four questions to extract the right information. In winter (A2), the same family looks for the best option in December: five ads — France, Thailand, Canary Islands, Canada, Italy — and six questions, including a real budget calculation.

Both versions end with the same task: place the countries on the map, then call the establishment to book — a ready-made oral practice. The answer keys are printed on the worksheets, with the full budget calculations for the A2 version. The summer US Letter PDF with watermark is free for everybody; everything else is for Premium members.

✨ What students practise

First, reading a real-life document: an ad has a price, a place, a list of services, a phone number — the student learns to scan it, not to read it word by word. Then, comparing: which ad answers the question? At A1, the answers are direct; at A2, question 5 asks for a full calculation — 14 nights at the given price, plus the travel cost for four people.

And finally, speaking: « Appelez un de ces établissements pour réserver. » The phone numbers are in the ads, the situation is set — the role-play starts by itself. In short, one worksheet that covers reading, logic, maths and oral expression, in a situation every family knows: choosing where to go on holiday.

1 📋 Read the brief

Family of four, two weeks, July or December, and the budget constraint.

2 📰 Scan the ads

Underline the prices, the services and the free options in each ad.

3 ✍️ Answer

Answer the questions, place the countries on the map — and calculate at A2.

4 📞 Call

Role-play: phone the establishment and book for the family.

☀️ The summer version (A1): four ads

The brief: a couple with two children (6 and 8), two weeks in July, a tight budget. Four destinations, four prices, and the details that change everything:

🇭🇷 Croatia · Split · 55 € / night · kids’ activities included
🇵 Portugal · Lisbon · 60 € / night · free guided visits
🇪🇸 Spain · Valencia · 70 € / night · daily family activities
🇲 Morocco · Marrakech · 45 € / night · free for kids under 10
💡 The A1 trap: the cheapest night (Marrakech, 45 €) is also the one where kids stay free — so the « best price » question is not just about reading a number, it is about reading the whole ad. The answer key explains it in one line.

❄️ The winter version (A2): five ads, and a real budget

Same family, December, and a new variable: the travel cost. A cheap night in Bangkok means nothing if the flight costs 450 € per person — and that is exactly what question 5 asks the students to calculate.

🇫🇷 France · Chamonix · 60 € / night · + 200 € by car
🇹🇭 Thailand · Bangkok · 30 € / night · + 450 € flight / person
🏝️ Canary Islands · Lanzarote · 55 € / night · + 200 € flight / person
🇨🇦 Canada · Quebec · 50 € / night · + 400 € flight / person
🇮🇹 Italy · Sicily · 40 € / night · + 150 € flight / person
🧮 Question 5 · total cost for 14 nights + travel for four
🧮 The answer key does the maths: Chamonix 1 040 €, Sicily 1 160 €, Lanzarote 1 570 € — within the 2 000 € budget; Bangkok 2 220 € and Quebec 2 300 € — too expensive. The students see, in one table, why the cheapest night is not the cheapest holiday.

💎 The clean versions (Premium)

Eight files in all: the summer worksheet in A4 and US Letter (PDF and DOCX), and the winter worksheet in A4 and US Letter (PDF and DOCX). The DOCX files let you change the destinations, the prices or the budget — useful to rebuild the exercise with your own numbers.

🎯 Recommended level, and the next steps

💡 Best fit: A1 for the summer version, A2 for the winter one — and the two together make a nice progression across the school year: same family, same task, one level up. In pairs, it works even better: one student plays the receptionist, the other calls to book, using the phone number from the ad.
